  • Dare #7: Live on a cash only budget

Posted on April 29th, 2012 Sonia No comments

The Dare:  In order to force myself to live within a budget, I will live on a cash only budget for the month of May, in the spirit of

    The Darer:  Me

Current Status:  Accepted, not yet performed.

Estimated Implementation of Dare: Start date – May 1, 2012.

The Details:  I’m embarrassed to say that I have no idea how my finances are doing.  I have two degrees in fields that deal with numbers and decision, yet I live in a black hole when it comes to my personal finances.  They’re not even complicated, I just don’t know where all the money goes.  And while I use mint.com (which I love) and it it tracks my spending, the effect doesn’t last.  So, inspired by Gail Vaz-Oxdale of ‘Til Debt do us Part‘, I will try to gain control over my personal finances, starting this month of May.

The How:   Variable expenses (gas/bus transport/food/miscellaneous) are budgeted with a weekly budget.  Every Sunday, the weekly budgets will be placed in marked ziploc bags (sorry Gail, i don’t have enough jars…plus ziploc bags are easier to carry around in my purse).  Receipts for all expenses will be placed in the ziploc bag that money was removed from.  When the money runs out, the spending ends.  I will carry my credit card with me…but only for business expenses.  If this causes me to cheat (but I’m sure I have enough self control lol), I will try this again next month with my credit card in my freezer.

At the end of the month I will re-work the budget based on the results.  The goal is to increase savings and decrease spending.

Red Flags:  Its getting warm out there – which mean’s it’s social season – eating out, concerts, weekend trips (read expensive).  Will have to start getting creative…and incredibly cheap lol.

  • Dare #6: Do a 21 Day Detox

Posted on April 29th, 2012 Sonia No comments

The Dare:  Follow Dr. Joshi’s Holistic Detox for 21 days…and blog about it daily (will be blogged about at http://365daysofhealthy.com/)

    The Darer:  Me

Current Status:  Accepted, not yet performed.

Estimated Implementation of Dare: Start date – May 1, 2012.

The Details:  I’m feeling sluggish and tired and need a kickstart to my plan of summer healthy living.  So I’ve decided to do Dr. Joshi’s detox.  Now I’ve done this before.  I’ve done it for 10 days, and the second time I lasted the full 21 days, with great results in energy (more about past attemtps here).  I haven’t been able to do it since, so I’m daring myself to try again…and to blog about it everyday, for 21 days.  Along with my pilates groupon that starts in May and the new (used) road bike I bought today, May should be a good kickstart month 🙂

The top 10 detox rules are:

    1. No red meat
    2. No dairy produce (except for natural yoghurt)
    3. No fruit (except ripe bananas)
    4. No wheat, gluten, yeast
    5. No alcohol – (this is the easiest since I don’t drink)
    6. No biscuits, cakes, doughnuts
    7. No jams/spreads (except honey)
    8. No coffee, decaf or regular, and no tea
    9. No sugar, chocolate or sweets
    10.  No artificially produced flavorings: ketchup, vinegar, mustard etc
  • Dare #5: Organize a Speed Dating Night

Posted on April 24th, 2012 Sonia No comments

The Dare:  To host a speed dating night specifically for the muslim community (we’re calling it d4m…dating for muslims.  like it?)

    The Darer:  Me

Current Status:  Accepted, not yet performed.

Estimated Implementation of Dare: May 19, 2012

The Details:  There is an influx of dating websites catered to specific communities but there is a lack of singles events catered to those communities.  As you graduate and leave school you network shrinks and it becomes harder and harder to meet people.  So I’ve been tasked to try to fix that problem (and if it help me in the long run, why not lol).  So as a pilot project, I’m running a speed dating event for muslims.  It’s by referral/invite only – so we’re filtering the candidates.  15 guys, 15 girls, 5 minutes of convo – it’s going to be a fun night.  Details coming soon at d4m.cre8vent.com.

  • Dare #3: Walk/Bike to Montreal

Posted on April 16th, 2012 Sonia No comments

The Dare:  To walk or bike from Ottawa to Montreal – a distance of 224 km.

    The Darer:  Ahmed J.

Current Status:  Accepted, not yet performed.

Estimated Time of Dare:  September of 2012 (when it cools down a bit but the days are still long)

The Details:  I think Ahmed didn’t expect me to do this dare.  I didn’t expect me to do this dare.  But I’ve decided I can’t use a veto this early in the year.  So I’ll do this (isa).

Interestingly enough, my first instinct was to WALK.  Yes to walk.  Right away I pulled out my google maps and it said it would take me 36 hours.  Not so bad right?  I could do that over a long weekend.  But when I did some research online, the other examples I found said it took them 12 days.  I can’t take 12 days for this dare.

And so I’ve decided.  If you know me you’ll know why my first instinct was to walk.  I bike everyday to work…very very very slowly.  My bike is slow enough, and then I’ve added a basket to the front – yes I’m that biker.   The one you always pass.  But as Jimmy highlighted on my birthday, it might not be me – it has a lot to do with my non-road bike.  Aha – and I thought it was all my fault 🙂

So I will endeavor to find a better bike, bike all summer long for practice, and September take the plunge.  Of course instead of doing it all in one day, I’ll probably break it up over the weekend – no ones said anything about doing it in a certain period of time 🙂

Route I will take:  Option 1

Note:  I am going ONE WAY only :0)

Wanted:  An accomplice.  I want to do this, but for safety reasons, I’d rather someone is biking with me.  Anyone?!?

April 24, 2012 – I’ve found an accomplice – Ahmed D. has agreed to bike with me to MTL.  Apparently he’s biked over 100km in a day before…I on the other hand have a max of around 25 (I’m rounding up lol).  It’s getting serious now! :0)

  • Dare #2: Perform a stand up comedy routine

Posted on April 15th, 2012 Sonia No comments

The Dare:  To perform a stand up comedy routine on amateur night at Absolute Comedy.

    The Darer:  Naima S.

Current Status:  Accepted, not yet performed.

The Details:  I have to admit, this dare is brilliant.  Evil but brilliant.  As soon as Naima dared me (at my birthday brunch) I felt the anxiety building up.  Let me be clear – I am not a comedian, nor have I ever dreamt to be a comedian.  I don’t write jokes in my spare time, I don’t even tell jokes…I just laugh at them.  So this dare is not a well-meaning push for an artist to finally share his craft in front of a supportive audience.  No – this dare is designed to just embarass me, surrounded by a heckling audience of friends lol.  Will it push me out of my comfort zone?  Yes.  Does it abide by my dare rules?  Yes.  So I guess I have to do it…..  Am I happy about it?  I’m amused and scared sh*tless.

I have to perform in June….I guess it’s time to start buying Idiot Guide Books on ‘How to be a Stand Up Comic”.

  • Dare #1: Run a half marathon

Posted on April 14th, 2012 Sonia No comments

The Dare:  To run/survive a half marathon in September during the Army Run

The Darer:  Me (yes I’m allowed to dare myself too)

Status:  Accepted…but won’t be proven until September lol. But I’ll have to train before then – I’ll continusouly be posting updates on my progress (or lack thereof).  My goal is to two-fold…to complete the race by running the whole way AND to be ahead of the speed walkers…they’re quicker than they look lol.

    April 15, 2012 – I registered for the Army Run September 23rd.  I paid and I’ve committed. Now I just have to train…just. :0)
